Total revenue for cold chain logistics service providers reached RMB 424.91 billion in the first three quarters, marking a 3.85% year-on-year increase.

The burgeoning fresh food e-commerce sector has been a key driver of cold chain demand. Sales in this segment grew by approximately 15% year-on-year during the third quarter, with fruit and vegetable products showing the most significant increase.

Liu Fei, Deputy Secretary-General of the Cold Chain Logistics Professional Committee under the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, noted that throughout the first half of the year, China’s cold chain logistics industry exhibited an overall operational trend characterised by ‘stable demand, expanded scale, and structural adjustment’.

Infrastructure upgrade

Behind the expansion of cold chain logistics lies the continuous upgrading of infrastructure.

By the third quarter of 2025, China’s total cold storage capacity had reached 263 million cubic metres, representing a year-on-year increase of 7.35%.

The third quarter alone saw an additional 2.5359 million cubic metres added to capacity.

However, against the backdrop of destocking in cold storage facilities, construction has gradually become more rational, with capacity growth slowing. Concurrently, corporate surveys indicate that cold storage rental rates remain depressed, squeezing profit margins for enterprises.

The refrigerated vehicle market, particularly in the new energy sector, has shown particularly strong performance.

Third-quarter refrigerated vehicle sales reached 23,251 units, marking a 41.40% year-on-year increase. Among these, new energy refrigerated vehicle sales stood at 10,024 units, surging by 125.05% year-on-year.

Liu Fei, Deputy Secretary-General of the Cold Chain Logistics Professional Committee under the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, stated that the record-high penetration rate of new energy refrigerated vehicles is attributable to financial subsidies from both national and local governments, alongside further liberalisation of road access rights.

New energy vehicles surge

New energy refrigerated vehicles are experiencing explosive growth.

Nationwide data reveals that sales of new energy refrigerated vehicles reached 10,548 units in the first half of the year, marking a year-on-year increase of 119.61%. The market penetration rate for new energy refrigerated vehicles reached 35.8%, up 16.5 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

This growth momentum intensified further in the third quarter, with the penetration rate of new energy refrigerated vehicles projected to rise to around 40%.

Cost advantages are the key driver behind the widespread adoption of new energy refrigerated trucks. From a cost perspective, the average cost of new energy refrigerated trucks is 5% to 10% lower than that of traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

Peng Hao, General Manager of Yutong Light Trucks, revealed that by September 2025, the market penetration rate of new energy light-duty refrigerated trucks had surpassed 57%. The industry now stands at the cusp of both green transformation and market expansion.

Cross-border cold chain expansion

Against the backdrop of accelerating restructuring in global trade and industrial chains, China’s cold chain sector is entering a new era brimming with opportunities.

The global cold chain logistics market is projected to reach approximately US$363.8 billion by 2024, with China accounting for over 20% of this total.

Cui Zhongfu, Chief Economist of the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, stated that the global cold chain logistics market holds immense potential, with its scale projected to exceed US$600 billion by 2028.

The burgeoning cross-border e-commerce sector presents fresh opportunities for China’s cold chain enterprises. In 2024, China’s cross-border e-commerce imports and exports reached RMB 2.63 trillion, marking a 10.8% increase and accounting for 6% of total import and export value.

China’s pioneering international cold chain logistics standard, the ‘Requirements for Contactless Delivery in Cold Chain Logistics’, was formally released in November 2024, significantly enhancing China’s voice and influence in global cold chain logistics rule-making.

An increasing number of Chinese enterprises are expanding into international markets through innovative models such as ‘cross-border + integrated warehousing and distribution’ and ‘multimodal transport + cross-border cold chain’.

Corporate Transformation Pathways

Confronted with resource misallocation within the industry, cold chain enterprises are actively exploring new development pathways.

Industry data indicates that the current average vacancy rate for cold storage facilities nationwide stands at 35%, while refrigerated vehicles also operate at over 35% empty-run rates. Their average daily mileage is merely 250 kilometres, less than 60% of that achieved by general cargo vehicles.

The inefficiency in resource utilisation and associated cost losses are particularly acute.

Against this backdrop, platform-based solutions have emerged. Take Huading Cold Chain as an example: by establishing an ‘Open Mutual-Drive Platform for Warehouses, Vehicles and Routes’, the company has integrated over 400,000 square metres of high-standard multi-storey warehouses nationwide, 5,347 trunk and feeder routes, and more than 40,000 deployable refrigerated vehicles.

This model enables partners to substantially reduce warehousing and distribution costs, rapidly expand market reach, and enhance resilience against operational risks.

Collaborative efforts between regional cold chain enterprises and national platforms have yielded tangible results. For instance, after integrating into the industry network, Shijiazhuang Huangjin Technology Co., Ltd. achieved over 40% improvement in warehouse utilisation rates, alongside doubling both client base and order volume.
